Storytelling in Times of Uncertainty

We are living through a time of uncertainty—collectively as a society, and individually on our own paths. Uncertainty arrives in different forms, asking each of us to navigate the spaces between what we know and what we cannot yet see.
For me, uncertainty currently takes the shape of waiting for surgery. It is scheduled to happen soon, yet so many questions remain unanswered. Will I be able to participate in a beautiful performance in Poland with a wonderful collective of women, a project we have been nurturing for months? Will I be able to swim in the sea this summer, something I have been deeply looking forward to? What will the recovery bring, and what will the results reveal?
The unknown stretches before me like an uncharted landscape. And yet, this experience is teaching me something profound.
Reframing the Narrative Through Storytelling
Facing uncertainty invites me to reframe my own narrative. It asks me to listen more deeply to my inner knowing and to revisit the stories I carry within me.
How do we use storytelling in times of uncertainty?
For me, stories become reflections of lived experience. They remind me that every journey contains challenges, and that challenges often become the soil from which growth emerges. Some of life's most significant lessons arrive through moments we never would have chosen.
The stories I return to are stories of perseverance, resilience, and unexpected transformation. They are reminders of core values, of what truly matters, and of the strength that reveals itself when life becomes uncertain.
The Stories We Tell Ourselves
This season has also encouraged me to question some of the stories I once told myself.
Some of those stories were rooted in fear. Some were shaped by unexpressed anger. Others were written from places of self-protection rather than self-compassion.
As I revisit them, I am reminded of the importance of giving myself permission to set boundaries, to express difficult emotions, and to reclaim space for my own needs and wellbeing.
Listening to the Stories of Others
Uncertainty also invites us to listen.
Listening to the stories of others can be profoundly empowering. It reminds us that we are not alone in our struggles, our questions, or our hopes. Through shared stories, we discover connection. Through connection, we discover strength.
Every story becomes a bridge.
This is a time of uncertainty.
And it is also a time of storytelling.
A time for seeking light in dark places and challenging the narratives of limitation. A time for creating stories of appreciation for what is present, rather than focusing solely on what is missing.
It is a time for telling stories of gratitude. Stories of my son and the immense gift he is in my life. Stories of my partner and his kindness, patience, and support.
Stories of the people who continue to walk beside me through both certainty and uncertainty.
Resilience, Courage, and What Comes Next
As I move through this season, I find myself drawn to stories of resilience, strength, honesty, and courage.
Stories that honour rest. Stories that make space for wonder.
Stories that ask: What new life might emerge from this experience? What new creativity, art, wisdom, or path might reveal itself? What unexpected gifts may be hidden within this chapter?
For now, I continue to listen, and to tell stories.
Stories that help me remember who I am. Stories that help me trust the unknown. Stories that illuminate the path ahead, even when I cannot yet see where it leads.
